Great White Roundup
The drums of war beat tumultuously through this parched season
of lengthening days, yet for those who are listening carefully
subtle notes of hope arise amidst the din.
One resonant note of hope over the last eight years has been the
emergence of the White Buffaloes. According to ancient understandings
of North America, the white buffalo is deemed a sign of great
importance. In our time of immense global woe, to have 10 such
buffaloes come into the world a veritable herd amplifies
the ray of hope the buffalo represent.
Heres a roundup of news on these remarkable harbingers.
On March 19, the Chicago Tribune featured a story updating
the news on Miracle, the first white buffalo, who was born August
20, 1994 in Janesville, WI.
Tribune reporter William Hageman wrote that since Miracles
birth almost a half-million people have visited the Heider farm.
The visitors come in such large numbers because, as related in
Chapter 9 of Legend of the Rainbow Warriors, Miracle was
said to be a sign of the fulfillment of a centuries-old Native
American prophecy: the return of the spirit of Pte San Win
(White Buffalo Calf Maiden).
One Lakota spiritual interpreter, Floyd Hand from Pine Ridge,
S.D., likens the white buffalo legend to other spiritual teachings
such as the Seminoles' Corn Lady and the folk traditions surrounding
Our Lady of Guadeloupe and other apparitions of the Virgin Mary.
"They're all kind of the same focus," Hand said. "She
(White Buffalo Woman) is an avatar, a starperson. Jesus was one
of them, and so is this mother who came home to us again."
White Buffalo Calf Maiden, who came among the Indian people 19
generations ago to teach, promised she would someday return. She
told the people that the birth of a white buffalo calf would be
a sign that her return was imminent, at which time she would help
to purify the world.
A year before the birth of Miracle, Mr. Hand told the Tribune,
White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared to him in a vision and told
him the sign would soon come. She also prophesied several events:
turbulent times in the United States starting in 2003, water becoming
"as rare as gold," war and natural disasters -- all
meant to get America back on a more spiritual path, according
to Mr. Hand.
Since1994 Miracle has matured and become a mother herself. She
had calves in 1998 and 2000, neither of them white. She could
live, and produce calves, for another couple of decades.
The Tribune story ends with a quote from farmer Dave Heider about
the teachings of the white buffalo: "
there's still
another part of the legend to be fulfilled. The prophecy said
she'd turn white again when there was peace in the world

Among the nine other white buffaloes born since Miracle came on
the scene, are three who are part of a herd managed by Jim and
Dena Riley. The Rileys and their herd relocated over the winter
from South Dakota to what is familiar territory for them: Flagstaff,
AZ, just south of the Grand Canyon.
Thus, from now on as visitors head for one of the natural wonders
of the world, they will drive by the front gate to Spirit Mountain
Ranch and, hopefully, have an opportunity to visit Miracle Moon,
Rainbow Spirit, and Peace Pilgrim three related white buffalo.

However,
all is not well. The Planning and Zoning Commission of Coconino
County, AZ, has denied a request from the Rileys to open the gates
of Spirit Mountain Ranch to the public. Their ruling stated that
the buffalo don't belong there, and that their presence would
create a "carnival" atmosphere. The Rileys have appealed
to the board of supervisors and a hearing deciding the
fate of the white buffalo in Northern Arizona has been
set for April 16th, 2002. The Rileys are asking for help. They
need people to show support for the ranch. If you have questions
or would like to be in contact to lend support, call Barry at
928-649-8509 or e-mail him: ASBARRY@aol.com
If you are visiting in Arizona, you can get to the ranch by heading
from Flagstaff toward the Grand Canyon on Hwy 180. After 20 miles
youll reach a prairie called Kendrick Park. On the right
you will see a brown building with a picture of the white buffalo
on the side. The white buffalo are living, fenced in, on the North
side of the building.

Update on Hiroshima Peace Flame Walk
As reported in the March edition of the Chiron Communiqué,
a small band of pilgrims is carrying a spark of the Hiroshima
Peace Flame across the US, planning to conclude their prayer walk
in New York City on May 12, 2002.
The flame they carry was ignited 57 years ago from the embers
of the atomic bomb blast that destroyed Hiroshima, Japan. The
flame has been kept steadily burning ever since, nurtured with
prayer for forgiveness, understanding, and world peace.
The walkers and the flame they carry are now in Virginia and heading
north toward the nations capital for what promises to be
a momentous weekend, April 2023. At that time Washington
will be teeming with thousands upon thousands of people in a mass
demonstration for peace. Officials estimate there will be 20,000+
peace activists, antinuclear supporters and many more people
of various political persuasions.
The walks intention to be in Washington on this weekend
has caused a split. Tom Dostou (Nabesse Pishum) and Jerzy
Kokurewicz left the walk at the end of March. Tom has been part
of the walk since the beginning. He began planning this walk while
he was in Japan in 2000. There he was entrusted with the Hiroshima
Flame, and he conceived the vision of returning it to where it
had come from not as a protest, but as a deed of spiritual
redemption.
He passed on his vision to the Japanese people he felt were best
suited to carry out this mission. When that vision was accepted
by Jun-san of the Nipponzan Miyohoji Order of Buddhist Monks and
Nuns, the responsibility for care of the flame and for conduct
around the flame was also passed to her.
Tom and Jerzy came to regard the decision to be part of this larger
gathering in Washington as dangerous and unwise. They see potential
for violence and arrest. According to letters written by Tom and
Jerzy, Jun-san's decision to go to Washington on April 20 effectively
changed the walk, for them, from a prayer action to a political
action.
In a telephone interview Junsan said she sees the situation
another way. She made the determination to bring the walk and
the flame to Washington long ago, and she feels the Hiroshima
Flame pilgrims will be bringing a spirit of peace and illumination
with them, and that it is essential that they be there to anchor
those qualities.
The Hiroshima Peace Flame Walk will continue north from Washington
to New York City, arriving on May 12, 2002, where the walkers
and supporters will hold vigils in New York at UN headquarters
and at the site of the destroyed World Trade Center. Then the
pilgrims will carry the fire to Arizona, and return it ceremonially
to the Earth at the Red Rock mine where the uranium for the Hiroshima
bomb was dug from the soil.

SaturnPluto Opposition 2002
From now until the end of May and likely well beyond that
time the world will feel the building tension of a basic
but powerful astrological pattern: the opposition of the planets
Saturn and Pluto.
Its well worth paying attention to this opposition, which
has been in effect for nearly a year already.
Most
professional astrologers agree that the opposition is the dominant
cosmic signature of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center,
and all the troubles national and international
that have proceeded therefrom, including the ominous and growing
restriction of basic Constitutional freedoms in America, and the
ArabIsraeli conflagration in the Middle East.
The basic themes represented by this planetary opposition are
a clash of worldviews, crises of power, and open conflict, such
as the Unholy Global War now mounting. There is a tendency
on both global and personal levels to see things as black
and white: "they" (whoever they might be) are evil and
unprincipled, "we" are noble and "absolutely right."
We have the "truth."
Yet life is rarely so unambiguous. The Russian writer Alexander
Solzhenitsyn once observed: "If only there were evil people
somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds and it were necessary
only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But
the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every
human being..."
As above, so below. In accordance with the movement of the planets,
energy accentuating this primary theme will build from now until
the final exact opposition of Saturn (in Gemini) and Pluto (in
Sagittarius) on May 25. Then it will be cranked up and extended
by a powerful eclipse the very next day a celestial event
that will likely propel the force of the opposition for months.
According to the general thread of thought among astrologers,
we are likely to see more of the following: Economic recession.
Rise in oil prices for the longterm. War (Rob Hand
http://www.robhand.com/
a wellknown astrologer, has written that it is possible
China will be involved before the year 2002 is over). Earthquakes
and general upheaval (astrologer Alan Oken http://www.thewisdomschool.org/
has observed of the opposition process now underway:
"The towers have fallen; the towers will continue to fall).
The continuing rise of global fascism, including tightening governmental
restrictions in the US (Traditional Hopi elders say martial law
is coming soon to America; they pronounced this well before 9/11).
While this is a stunning and depressing litany of probabilities,
the ultimate outcome of the SaturnPluto opposition need
not be negative. The stars impel, they do not compel. We have
free will, and always the opportunity to exercise it from a place
of insight and strength. When approached wisely, an opposition
yields a partnership, a complement, not a clash or a crash.
An obvious observation: its time to face our shadows: personal,
national, and global. Denial and projection lead inevitably to
conflict. Its just the way the energy pattern works. Become
conscious of the polarities and you are empowered to transcend
them. Remain willfully ignorant, and suffer the pain of harsh
awakenings.
In our current global predicament, one might say there is an absolute
and urgent demand for objectivity; otherwise all the likely consequences
enumerated above will come to pass. The hour is late.
Prayer and ceremonial work of all kinds are of tremendous importance
in the weeks ahead. It is no time to be asleep, or cut off from
the spirit by virtue of fear, alcohol, strong drugs or other escape
pathways. The opposition pattern insists upon alertness, consciousness.
The entire cycle of Saturn and Pluto, which is now at the halfway
point (opposition) began in 1982 with their conjunction (coming
together at the same place in the zodiac) at 28 degrees of Libra.
The Sabian symbol, or word picture, for this particular degree
of the Zodiac is ultimately very positive: "A man becoming
aware of the spiritual forces surrounding and assisting him. Realization
of the invisible community in the subtle realm, and from that
the development of inner assurance." But, perhaps needless
to say, its not so easy getting to this point of realization.
The opposition is bringing the opportunity, however, and also
creating an opportunity to grasp the distance we have to travel
to get to this level of awareness
.
Help of the Spiritual World
"We
must eradicate from the soul all fear and terror of what comes
towards the human being out of the future. We must acquire serenity
in all feelings and sensations about the future.
"We must look forward with absolute equanimity to everything
that may come. And we must think only that whatever comes is given
to us by a world directive full of wisdom. It is part of what
we must learn in this age, namely, to live out of pure trust
Trust in the everpresent help of the spiritual world.
"Truly, nothing else will do if our courage is not to fail
us. And let us seek the awakening from within, every morning and
evening."
- Rudolf Steiner
